Logo design for companies

Vector and matrix logos. What type of logo to choose for your company

3

What makes a good logo

The logo is the gateway for any prospective customer to a company. It's the first thing you see, the first thing that should jump out at you. It's the number 1 communication vector for a brand, essential for creating a strong identity.

A logo must :

  • Be quickly recognisable
  • Getting a clear message across very quickly
  • Be available in several versions and forms
  • Adapt to different media and formats
  • Be understandable to everyone, whatever their culture or language.
  • Blending in with current best practice in graphics
  • Lasting over time

Creating a logo is the art of conveying a clear, focused emotion in a short space of time.

The different types of logo

When creating a graphic charter and a website, creating a logo quickly becomes unavoidable. There are several types of logo:

  • Vector logos
Vector logos are created using vectors and mathematical formulas that allow them to be enlarged ad infinitum without any loss of quality. The definition/resolution of the logo does not suffer when it is enlarged, because it does not contain pixelated images but lines or curves calculated by the machine displaying it. They are essential for companies that need to print or display their logo on very large surfaces (billboards, urban advertising). This is the most common type of logo used by print and web communications agencies. They are designed using vector software such as AI (Adobe Illustrator).

  • Matrix logos
Unlike vector logos, raster logos are made up of pixels. They have the advantage of being able to incorporate external images/symbols but have the disadvantage of losing resolution as soon as the logo is enlarged. This is not necessarily a disadvantage when the logo is only to be used on the web or on media of moderate size.
