Google Search Console (GSC), formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools, is a free set of tools offered by Google that helps site owners, webmasters, professional SEOs and even the occasional hobbyist understand how Google sees their site. With this knowledge, you can use GSC to improve your site's SEO and get better search engine results.

Getting to grips with the interface: essential points of reference as soon as you log on
The first thing a new Google Search Console (GSC) user notices after selecting a property is the sidebar, where each report is arranged by major theme: "Overview", "Performance", "URL Inspection", "Pages", "Experience", "Improvements" and "Security & Action".ns manual . In the case of a Shopify shop selling accessories for urban bikes, we noticed a sudden drop in CTR in mid-May. Examination of the history showed that Google was testing a new layout for its results (massive appearance of YouTube videos). In other words, the performance was not linked to an onsite problem but to a change in the SERP. GSC makes it possible to confirm this type of phenomenon by filtering on the "Appearance in search results" tab; we can then see whether certain types of results (rich snippets, videos, web stories) are taking precedence over the classic blue links.
Why use several filters simultaneously?
Cross-filtering is one of the lesser-known features. You can combine "country", "device", "query" and "URL" to reduce statistical noise. Concrete exampleand: a Paris gym was seeing its mobile traffic stagnate while desktop traffic was increasing. By filtering "Device: Mobile" and "Page: /prices", the marketing managers identified an internal meshing problem on the responsive version - a hidden CTA button on certain Android smartphones. Without multi-filter segmentation, the fault would have remained invisible because the overall average traffic remained acceptable.
Analyse requests to decode user intent
Beyond raw volumes, each query generated in GSC is an indication of search intent. There are generally four main types: informational, navigational, transactional and local. For a health insurance comparator, the queries "student mutual insurance simulation" (informational) and "mutual insurance advice X" (navigational) should receive different editorial responses. By sorting your keywords by decreasing CTR, you can identify queries where you already appear in a good position but with a low click-through rate; this is a signal to work on the title/description markup. Conversely, a high CTR on queries in positions 8-9 suggests that the intention is extremely relevant - the site could make up places with a few backlinks or a little semantic enrichment.
Illustration: the "optimised snippet" effect
During a project for a Scandinavian design marketplace, we rewrote 120 meta description tags with a problem-solution-USP (Unique Selling Proposition) structure. The result: an average gain of 3 % in CTR, or 27,000 extra clicks per month. GSC was used as a barometer, thanks to the comparison of period N vs N-1 and segmentation by "Appearance: Enriched results". One notable point: these 27,000 new clicks generated around 1,200 additional transactions, confirming the direct impact of an optimised snippet on sales.
Segment by landing page to identify underperforming content
Selecting the "Pages" tab and then sorting by decreasing impressions reveals URLs that are attracting visibility without necessarily converting this visibility into visits. For example, an estate agency in Lyon realised that its article "Notary fees: 2023 calculation" was attracting 190,000 impressions for just 4,500 clicks (CTR: 2.4 %). After analysis, the headline read "simulator", but there was no interactive tool on the page. By integrating a real simulator (light JavaScript, live calculation), the CTR rose to 6.1 % and the average time spent rose from 37 to 89 seconds according to GA4. GSC made it possible to prioritise this action even before using other more expensive analysis suites.
Correlating pages and queries: dual matrix
Click on a page, then on the "Requests" tab, and you'll get the exact list of keywords that trigger the display of that page. This is a goldmine for identifying inconsistencies between published content and actual demand. In the B2B sector, a supplier of microelectronic components discovered that its article on the "IPC-610 standard" was being displayed for the query "IPC 620 difference certification". A quick content update, adding a comparative section, reduced the average position from 12 to 5 in three weeks.
Putting Google Analytics 4 into perspective to validate traffic quality
GSC measures performance right up to the click, while Google Analytics tracks the user after they arrive. Merging the two gives a 360° view. On WordPress, the Site Kit extension makes this easier; on Shopify, the native "Google & YouTube Channel" application can be used to display a GSC report directly in the back office. For example: a financial blog observed very good positions for "best life insurance 2024", but GA4 revealed a bounce rate of 88 %. When we inspected the Search Console, we noticed that most of the traffic was coming from an untargeted Google Discover carousel. The result was a poorly qualified audience. The team chose to segment its content into an /expert-/ sub-folder targeting more technical queries, reducing the bounce rate by 22 points.
Detect and resolve indexing problems using the "Pages" report
Since the end of 2022, the "Pages" report has replaced the old "Index Coverage" report. It classifies your URLs into four categories: " Valid , " Valid with warnings , " Excluded and " Error . At the launch of a medium specialising in vegan cooking, 9,000 "/recette/" URLs were excluded because of an incorrect canonical tag. The developers had left the <link rel="canonical" href="/">
in the template. A simple Search Console API request was used to export the list of affected URLs, and then a PHP patch solved the problem. Three weeks later, 92 % of recipes were re-indexed, resulting in a 54 % jump in organic impressions.
URL inspection: a surgical tool
The "URL Inspection" function is used to check the status of a page in real time. It details indexing, mobile rendering, canonicalisation and structured data. For a furniture e-commerce site, the tool reported that the page " /chaise-scandinave-bleue was indexed but not selected as canonical, Google preferring " /chaise-scandinave . Thanks to the inspection, the team realised that the duplication of content was too great, so they enhanced the product sheet with colour specifications, causing the blue version to be selected correctly - triggering an 18 % increase in sales on this reference.
Improve Core Web Vitals with the "Experience" report
Since the integration of user experience as an official ranking factor, Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID, CLS) have come under scrutiny. GSC offers a "Core Web Signals" report that segments "Mobile" and "Computer". Let's take a cultural news site: 70 % of its traffic comes from mobile first. The report indicated 480 URLs "Need improvement for LCP greater than 4 s. Cross-referencing with PageSpeed Insights and the Lighthouse audit, the team compressed the WebP images and implemented native lazy-loading - a simple attribute loading="lazy"
. Four months later, green URLs have risen from 8 % to 67 %, and the site has gained two average positions on its top 100 keywords.
Link between Core Web Vitals and conversion rates
On a project management SaaS, the improvement in LCP from 5.8s to 2.5s translated into +16 % free trial conversions. Although correlation is not causation, GSC has helped prove to the board the importance of investing in front-end optimisation. The company created an internal KPI: "Cost per second saved (technical budget / additional conversions). This CRO-inspired metric has been incorporated into the product roadmap.
Submitting and monitoring your sitemaps: best practice
The GSC Sitemaps module is not just a simple submission form. It records the history of submissions, warning of parsing errors or obsolete URLs. GSC does not show video performance directly, but the "Appearance of results" report reveals the key: tick "Videos" and observe post-deployment trends.
Configure alerts and rules to stay proactive
By default, GSC sends emails in the event of critical problems (manual penalty, hacking, significant drop in indexed pages). But it is possible to go further: via the Search Console API and a Google Apps Script, you can receive a daily alert on Slack if the CTR of a folder ("/blog/ ) falls below 3 %. A DNVB selling food supplements uses this workflow; as soon as an anomaly is detected, the SEO manager directly opens the page concerned, inspects the intent and determines whether a drop in position or a change in SERP is the cause.
Case study: blog redesign, loss of traffic and recovery via Search Console
In 2021, start-up GreenBikes migrated its blog from Ghost to Next.js. Two weeks after going live, it lost 35 % of organic traffic. For sites with more than 100,000 URLs, downloading the data manually is no longer viable (only 1,000 rows via the UI). The Search Console API authorises 50,000 rows per request. A flight ticket comparator collects performance data every night, inserts it into BigQuery, then triggers a Looker Studio dashboard fed from several sources - GSC, CrUX, and internal sales data. This automation makes it possible to monitor the "Impression → Click → Booking" ratio per query, which is impossible to see in the standard interface. Quota management and sampling
Warning: the API is subject to a quota of 2,000 requests per day and 100 per 100 seconds. A poorly optimised script can saturate it in less than an hour. Use the "date" dimension to request in increments (e.g. 7 days) and store locally, to limit redundant calls.
Advanced checklist for monthly analysis in Search Console
1. Check print anomalies (deviation >20 %) against historical seasonality.
2. Segment queries into top 100, then isolate CTR drops >1 point.
3. Check the "Error" or "Excluded" URLs in the "Pages" report.
4. Pass URL inspection on 10 random pages and ensure canonicalisation.
5. Audit Core Web Vitals by exporting the list of URLs "Needs improvement .
6. Update the sitemap if the number of valid URLs varies by ±5 %.
7. Export via API the 50,000 best Query-Page combinations and inject the data into your BI tool.
8. Check the "Links" section to detect an abnormal rise or fall in internal and external backlinks.
9. Check "Manual actions" and "Security problems (ransomware, spam).
10. Label pages that have received schema.org improvements and measure the impact using the "Appearance" filter.

Implementing a recurring 30-minute review, supported by GSC exports, enables raw data to be transformed into tangible decisions - drafting a new buying guide, optimising a product page, correcting a JavaScript blocking the crawler.
